Ben Green wins DTM Trophy season opener at Monza

A lights-to-flag victory for Ben Green: the British BMW driver from the FK Performance Motorsport team has won the first DTM Trophy race at Monza. For the best junior driver from the previous year, it was his second win in the feeder series on the DTM platform.

William Tregurtha with the Mercedes-AMG (CV Performance Group) completed the 1-2 for drivers from Great Britain. For Tregurtha and the team from Niederzissen, it was an almost perfect debut in the DTM Trophy. Moritz Löhner, the reigning DTM Esports Championship powered by MediaMarkt title winner, secured the final podium slot. With the BMW run by FK Performance Motorsport, Löhner competed in his first-ever race in real-world motorsport in which he ended up in the top three straight away.
Ben Green started the first race of the DTM Trophy season at Monza from pole position. In qualifying on Saturday morning, Green had come out on top from Löhner and Tregurtha. At the start, Green managed to defend his position and took the lead from his teammate Löhner. During the opening lap, the two managed to pull clear from the rest of the field.

In the following laps, Tregurtha closed the gap to the BMW duo while Löhner also closed up to Green. After six laps of racing, Tregurtha overtook Löhner for second. Further down the field, Lucas Mauron was on a spirited recovery drive with the Heide-Motorsport Audi. Following an infringement in qualifying, the Swiss had to start from the back and worked his way up through the ranks, partly with spectacular manoeuvres. However, Mauron’s mission came to a premature halt around the halfway point of the race. Having already progressed to eleventh place, he had a blown tyre that caused considerable damage to the Audi and many parts were scattered across the track. At the same time, Stéphane Kox came to a halt with the Ring-Racing Toyota due to a technical failure. To allow for the two cars to be recovered, the safety car was deployed and the race was neutralised.

Racing resumed with only six minutes remaining. Green defended his lead, but behind him, things became exciting once more. Moritz Löhner had the better of Tregurtha at the restart and claimed second place. Tregurtha started a successful attack on the sim racer during the penultimate lap and got the position back.

The second DTM Trophy race starts on Sunday, again at 3.10pm. SPORT1 is broadcasting live from 3pm. The race can also be watched live from all over the world on the DTM streaming portal DTM Grid (grid.dtm.com).
